diabetes acne and how to deal with it

Higher blood glucose levels

The result: The young men, who struggled with pimples, had on average higher blood sugar levels than those without skin lesions. In addition, acne patients were more likely to develop insulin resistance: 22 percent versus 11 percent in the control group. Insulin resistance is also referred to as pre-diabetes. The cells react increasingly poorer to the messenger insulin . Although this pre-diabetes usually has no symptoms, it means that someone has an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.


Precaution recommended

The study authors recommend that acne patients have their blood sugar levels checked regularly to detect possible type 2 diabetes at an early stage. Because diagnosed at the initial stage, the disease is easier to treat or can be completely prevented. Whether the results can also be transferred to women, however, has yet to be revealed in further research.

Acne causes pustules, pimples and blackheads on the face, and less often on the back and décolleté. Most adolescents are affected during puberty. In four percent of the population, however, the skin disease also occurs in adulthood and can then have many causes.


Acne and diabetes: the relationships

Not just hormonal disorders are related to acne. Meanwhile, researchers have been able to prove that the skin disease signals insulin resistance, so acne could be a sign of diabetes.

Although acne is mainly due to certain hormonal changes, attempts to explain the most common skin disease in the world with nutrition, under no circumstances something new – are mainly carbohydrates with high glycemic index (chocolate, sweets, white bread, etc.), but also milk and Dairy products made responsible for the development or aggravation of acne. In the meantime, an Indian study has been able to   show more precisely why this is so and confirms the assumptions about the relationships between certain diets and acne.

Pimples and blackheads – a signal for diabetes?

The research team at the Postgraduate Institute for Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh found that people suffering from acne had insulin resistance (insensitivity of the cells to ingest sugar with insulin), pre-diabetes over long periods, and eventually As a result, type 2 diabetes may have been significantly more prevalent.

Subjects of the study were one hundred male acne patients over twenty years suffering from various types of acne and a control group of male participants without skin problems. Acne patients on average had higher blood sugar than the control group. In addition, in 22 percent of men affected by acne, insulin resistance was found to be 11 percent in the control group.

In summary, the study states that people affected by acne are at increased risk for diabetes and metabolic syndrome (obesity, high blood pressure).

What to do?

In the case of persistent acne, a regular medical check-up of the blood sugar level is recommended in order to determine in good time whether any consequences related to insulin resistance may develop. Especially in type 2 diabetes, the number of unrecognized diseases is relatively high, since the disease usually develops slowly and often proceeds inconspicuously. Before also follow-up illnesses have been shown, the  check-up is  offered to avoid a harmful course.
