Assess and nursing diagnosis for multiple sclerosis
Nursing will assess the level of care necessary for the patient to be autonomous in the basic activities of daily life, guide in treatment and therapeutic adherence, educating and offering advice, support and follow-up to both the patient and their family. Diagnosis is an experience that alters the normal course of life.
It is a complex and variable disease that affects the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual state. A disease in constant movement in which both the patient and their relatives, must make transcendental decisions, constantly, regardless of the phase of mourning in which they are.
- Denial : Defense to postpone the ‘impact received’ (can not be …) –
- Negotiation with reality : Secret defense agreement (negotiation with your health).
- Depression : Appears as a result of the consciousness of what has already been lost. Anxiety and circular ideas. The person needs containment in front of their fears and fantasies.
- Ira : At last you see the reality before which you try to reveal yourself. You will need to express your anger to get rid of it. Why me?
- Acceptance : Only appears when the person has been able to resolve their issues. At this stage you get tired.
It does not necessarily go through all stages, the mourning may be repeated after an outbreak, change of treatment or progress of the disease.
Nursing will take care of the patient, be co-responsible in the care of their health, follow up on the correct use and adherence of medicines, supervise the performance of control tests and provide guidance on socio-sanitary resources and hygienic dietary measures. It will be accessible, to solve doubts as soon as possible (email, telephone contact).
The patient must know how to act before the symptoms: outbreak, fatigue, spasticity, incontinence, infections and that he understands the medical terms with colloquial words.
To conclude, to say, that on the part of nursing it is necessary an updated scientific knowledge about the disease, communication skills, active listening and team work.
So far, there is no cure for multiple sclerosis, adherence to treatment, professional support, good management and communication will allow patients and family members to face the future with hope, improving their quality of life.
“The perception of the person about their position in life, in the context of their culture and value system and in relation to their objectives, expectations, criteria and concerns”, defines the quality of life.
